Sound Mixing and Sound Engineering - The Weakest Link?
"Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of His praise be heard." Psalm 66:8
Sound engineering has been one of the most neglected areas in our churches. A competent sound crew can enable the worship team to be less distracted and more focused on leading worship, and enhance the atmosphere and the energy of a worship experience as well. Our church sound engineers should be properly trained and equipped so we can give our best to God.
Outline:
- The role and the goals of a worship sound tech
- The characteristics of sound
- How to choose the right microphones and use them properly
- Detailed understanding of operating a mixer
- What makes a good sound mix?
- Eliminating noise and feedback
- Working with the worship team
Instructor:
Timothy Chan - bass player / sound engineer / worship leader / web designer
Tim has been actively involved in worship ministry as a bass player, sound engineer, and worship leader over the last ten years, serving God with joyful noise Xpress, his church, and with various Chinese Christians musicians and organizations. He has traveled on the majority of jnX's worship mission trips, playing bass and conducting bass and sound tech workshops in USA, Hong Kong,
China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and North East India. He has served as the worship ministry coordinator in two churches. Currently he's studying at the Worship & Arts Conservatory, and he has also received music training from the Jazzschool in Berkeley. He owns a home project studio that's frequented by jnX musicians and others. He also runs an audio consultation business called S2J Productions. Ultimately, Tim's passion is to mentor musicians and sound techs
in Asian churches so they can play more skillfully and worship more fervently.

Good sound demo. Excellent Q & A section. I learn more about the gain structure and how to set db level.
- Stephen Sinn, Seattle Chinese Alliance Church, WA, USA
I really appreciated the section covering the equipment, and calibrating the system. These are two areas that we have very little local expertise.
- Chung Ng, Seattle Chinese Baptist Church, WA, USA
Kool!! Very informative. Need more time!!
- Daniel Mung, a participant of the 2004 “Heal Our Lands” Worship Conference, India
Clarified some myths about how equipment should be placed and installed.
- Victor Suen, Crosspoint Chinese Church, CA, USA
I now understand better why and what I’ve been doing for the last 2 years. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
